Yankees Rally Past Braves 3-2 in 10 Innings

Ben Rice lined a tying single off the right-field fence with two outs in the ninth inning and Ryan McMahon followed with a game-winning sacrifice fly in the 10th to lead the New York Yankees past the Atlanta Braves 3-2 on Friday night in a rain-delayed game that finished after midnight.

The NL East leaders are 2-8 in extra-inning games and had their eight-game winning streak snapped. Yankees lefty Max Fried threw 6 1/3 scoreless innings in his first appearance against his former team, but Tyler Mahle matched him with six clean innings in his Atlanta debut.

Ninth-Inning Rally Saves Yankees

Austin Riley hit a two-run homer in the eighth and Matt Olson hit a solo shot in the ninth. With two outs and the Yankees down to their last out, struggling Austin Wells singled home a run off All-Star closer Raisel Iglesias. Amed Rosario walked, and Rice singled on a changeup that was a ball. Heliot Ramos was hit by a pitch to load the bases before Dylan Dodd got Luis García Jr. to ground out to send the game to extra innings.

The rally for New York began with rookie George Lombard Jr. safe on an infield single with one out, and he moved to third on Iglesias' throwing error.

Extra-Inning Heroics and Fried's Outing

David Bednar (5-3) pitched a scoreless 10th, aided by a Lombard off-balance throw from shortstop on Sean Murphy’s grounder and García’s over-the-shoulder capture at first base on Ronald Acuña Jr.'s popup to finish the inning. Rookie Spencer Jones was intentionally walked with one out in the bottom half and Lombard walked from Tyler Kinley (6-5) to load the bases. García, the automatic runner, scored easily on McMahon’s sac fly to deep right field on a full-count pitch as the Yankees improved to 5-42 when behind after eight innings.

First pitch was delayed 1 hour 55 minutes due to severe rain and thunderstorms. That was the eighth time in 10 games that a Yankees starter has allowed one run or fewer. Fried completed his first eight major league seasons with the Braves before leaving as a free agent to accept an eight-year, $218 million deal with New York in December 2024.
